Why should people want to work for RSC?

Wednesday, June 29, 2016

Bob: If you were to introduce the company to someone who was looking to work for us, what would you say to them to entice them and on what would you caution them to make sure they fit at RSC?

Carly: There is so much I can say about this! First of all, what we’re looking for are self motivated people. We want people that can come into a job, not know a lot about it, and learn and dig in. We don’t want people that don’t want to be here. You have to really want to be here and you have to appreciate what we do. We are all very passionate about our jobs. Every one of us really believe in what we do and we believe in the company, so we only want people that have that, too. You have to be passionate about real estate, or facilities, or some line of work. This is a job that if you want to be the CEO, you can be the CEO, if you work for it. That’s a positive. I don’t think there are a lot of jobs where, if you work hard, you can be whatever you want. I think what’s hard about working at RSC is you do have the ability to be whatever you want so when you come in, we say, “What do you want to do?” Most people don’t know. They say, “Well, I want to be a programmer.” So they’re a programmer. Then they go, “Well, I miss clients.” It’s hard to pick, but that’s a huge benefit.
We work from home, so you have a little bit of flexibility in your schedule, which I think is really nice for a lot of people. There’s also a caution with that. If you are working from home you really have to be disciplined. You have to make sure that you’re not at home just grocery shopping and doing laundry all day. You have to make sure that you can buckle in and work. That’s easier said than done.

The main thing for me is passion. We want people that care, want to do this, love it, and really think that ARCHIBUS can make a difference in people’s jobs and lives. I know it’s not changing the world, but it changes the facilities world. Facilities is a department that is not appreciated by most companies. It’s at the bottom of the totem pole. It shouldn’t be because it sustains the building and it keeps the lights on and you work there because of the people that work in facilities. ARCHIBUS really shows what people do. It gives people insight to how hard facilities and real estate work for you. It’s important and it changes lives. We want people that believe in that.

ARCHIBUS Applications: Lease Administration

Friday, June 24, 2016

This week we are excited to share with you all more about ARCHIBUS' Lease Administration Application. This application allows users to centralize and automate lease administration processes to increase efficiency, reduce errors, and avoid penalties.

Benefits

  • Automates processes for lease tracking and management
  • Improves access of lease information to facilitate easy analysis and reporting
  • Streamlines tracking of landlord and tenant responsibilities to avoid unnecessary charges
  • Minimizes errors and speeds data entry through intuitive prompts, reducing administrative costs

One of the greatest benefits is that this application can proactively track leases and options through alerts. Additionally, Lease administration allows users to drill through a personalized hierarchy to find the lease you need to manage, as well as review lease specifics through tabbed views and geospatial queries.

Organizations with extensive lease portfolios are faced with the daunting task of tracking numerous leases with varying expiration dates and equally variable terms of tenancy. Relying on manual processes to track and manage these leases can result in errors based on inaccessible or inaccurate information, missed renewal dates, internal customer frustration, and possible monetary penalties. Web-based ARCHIBUS Lease Administration provides a centralized repository, flexible dashboards, automated alerts, and more. Deploying the application will help streamline data entry, automate lease information-gathering and management, and improve analytic capabilities, all while providing a high service level at reduced cost.

Conversations with Todd: Automatic energy feeds into data management

Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Bob: You talk about NOAA and getting that information. How often and to what pieces of information do you synchronize? How does that work?

Todd: Every building is associated with a weather station that is nearby. Each night, ARCHIBUS pulls across updated weather information for that weather station so you can compare energy usage to the real time weather data as it becomes available.

IWMS creates promotion opportunities!

Wednesday, June 15, 2016

Megan: What have you seen, when a company goes from spreadsheets to an IWMS, as the biggest change they notice?

Bob: First of all, there is a little uneasiness with some of the staff because they think their jobs are going to be replaced by technology. The reality is their job shifts. They shift from producing a couple pieces of data points because it takes so long to produce in excel or on a piece of paper, to producing tens, twenties, hundreds of pieces of data points. Now they begin to provide very strong information. I’ve watched directors be promoted to VP simply because of the data we provide. I’ve seen that on multiple occasions. In fact, there is a story of a director who walked into a meeting with a vacancy/occupancy report of the entire global portfolio. One of the VPs goes, “Where did you get this?” The director said, “Well, I got it from the IWMS system that we’ve got.” The VP called two other VPs in and said, “Did you know we had this information?” The VPs said no. From that information, the director was raised into a VP position because the data was very accurate and it helped them make strategic decisions. They found anomalies and ebbs and flows in their data and their geographic locations.

Tuesday, June 14, 2016

RSC is excited to collaborate with Samsung on another amazing and free ARCHIBUS User Group training Thursday July 21st. Come join us for an in-depth training on ARCHIBUS' Building Operations Application with location, dinner, and refreshments provided by Samsung!

The Bay Area Archibus User Group (BAATUG) was started by Bob Stephen of Robert Stephen Consulting, LLC in April of 2006. The underlying purpose for the group was to provide answers to common questions asked by Bob's clients.

The monthly training group now consists of current clients and interested individuals wanting to learn more about ARCHIBUS, AutoCAD and report writing. The quarterly two hour collaborative forum consists of one hour of training on a previously announced topic, and a second hour in a round table discussion of any topic suggested by the group.

If you'd like to learn more about the event, check out our evite.

The culture at RSC

Wednesday, June 8, 2016

Bob: You talk about RSC culture and I credit you as one of the people that has coined the phrase “RSC 1.0 to RSC 2.0”. Can you talk about that transition and highlight a couple of things that you think have gone in the right direction and where else we need to go?

Carly: We’re in RSC 2.0 moving to RSC 3.0. I think the difference between the two is that RSC 2.0 is very deadline driven. We focus on deadlines and scope, schedule, cost. We don’t miss our deadlines, we care about them. Before, there wasn’t a lot of discipline. The RSC 2.0 culture is very disciplined. We clearly communicate when things are happening. I think communication is so important, it’s different, and it’s such a change. The other aspect is leadership is different and the RSC 2.0 has new staff. We have an amazing team and I think that it’s making a big difference. We have a new tech lead. Bob, the owner has changed a bit. We also have someone dedicated completely to writing proposals. The main thing is we have a lot more structure.

ARCHIBUS Applications: Personnel & Occupancy

Friday, June 3, 2016

This week we are excited to share with you a little more about ARCHIBUS' Personnel & Occupancy application! The Personnel & Occupancy application optimizes space occupancy rates and improves planning capability to accommodate future expansion, consolidation, or re-balancing.

Benefits

  • Provides immediate, accurate reporting of occupancy statistics for space usage and re-balancing purposes
  • Improves forecasting accuracy for future needs based on current room availability and planned occupancy growth
  • Simplifies assignment of employees to temporary or permanent available space using highlighted drawings
  • Communicates occupancy information easily through personalized, intuitive Web-based forms, summary tables, and reports
  • Helps achieve business results with ARCHIBUS Quick-Start, a productivity aid which includes tutorial videos and “How To” instructions
  • Increases productivity with ARCHIBUS All-in-One Home Page with quick access to 80% of most common tasks
  • Personnel & Occupancy Screenshot

Use the Space Console to assign personnel to rooms, identify opportunities for employee colocation, or search for both available space and individual occupants or teams

Immediate access to accurate personnel and occupancy information can often be a challenge to organizations, especially to those who experience high churn rates or are in the process of expanding or consolidating operations. ARCHIBUS Personnel & Occupancy provides managers with a Web-based means to retrieve the information they need from a central repository and link employee information with related space inventories, drawings, planning strategies, and more. The result is improved reporting on employee headcounts and locations, average room areas, room availability, space benchmarking, occupancy rates, and other vital knowledge needed to effectively manage an organization’s total cost of occupancy.

A day in the life of a tech lead at RSC!

Wednesday, June 1, 2016

Bob: You’re the tech lead here at RSC. Talk to me about a common day for you.

Todd: RSC’s a small company and I get to wear a lot of hats. That’s an exciting thing. I find myself doing software development and professional services support where I’m helping out with real time problems at other clients. I’m also managing a client of my own. I don’t think I have the heaviest load by far in terms of client administration, but I get to do a lot of different things and that’s fun.
